In the process of rewriting its liberation story, South Africa discovers that the small midwestern town of Northfield played a crucial role in its political awakening, i.e. the birth of its multiracial democracy. This is the surprising story told by Chérif Keïta, a Malian-born Professor at Carleton and resident of Northfield, believed by many in South Africa to have uncovered this hidden historic connection through an act of ancestral possession.
